Educationists in Zimbabwe have welcomed the Teacher Capacity Development Program that was launched in Harare yesterday by President Robert Mugabe.

But they say they want to have a huge stake in the programme to avoid various glitches like nepotism.

The Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe said there is need for transparency and fairness in choosing beneficiaries.

Chief executive Sifiso Ndlovu of the Zimbabwe Teachers Association echoed the same sentiments saying this was long overdue because the country’s teachers must be able to compete well with the rest of the world.

The University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Open University, Great Zimbabwe and Bindura University of Science and Education were selected to start this program which will focus on science, math, vocational training, languages and curriculum development.

Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe secretary general, Manuel Nyawo, told VOA reporter Jonga Kandemiiri that while they welcome the program the government should not invest in someone who is nearing his or her retirement age.
